Mathematics Endorsements for Inservice Teachers

Lewis & Clark College’s mathematics endorsement programs are designed to meet the needs of teachers who are at various places in their professional careers. Typical endorsement candidates include but are not limited to:

  • Practicing teachers wishing to gain insight into how mathematics is learned and how to promote learning for their students;

  • Teachers licensed in other subject areas wishing to change their teaching assignment to mathematics, or those holding transitional licenses;

  • Elementary teachers wishing to become specialists in mathematics.

Two programs of study and practicum are offered: the Advanced Mathematics endorsement is designed for individuals preparing to teach high school and the Basic Mathematics endorsement is for individuals preparing to teach at the middle level (through Algebra I). Both programs meet all State of Oregon requirements and guidelines. Because there are multiple paths to obtaining the background in mathematics required for each program, applications for admission, including transcripts, are assessed on a case-by-case basis.


Advanced Mathematics Endorsement for Licensed Teachers

(10 Semester Hours)

Expectations for admission:

  • Completion of a major in mathematics or its equivalent, or a minor in mathematics in conjunction with a degree in science, engineering, economics, computer science, geography or other technical field requiring extensive preparation in mathematics.

  • Passing score on the Praxis exam Mathematics: Content Knowledge (#10061).
Program requirements:
  1. MATH 579 Teaching Mathematics to Adolescents (3 SH). MATH 580 Integrating Technology into Secondary Mathematics (1 SH)

  2. Two electives (4-5 SH), chosen in consultation with a program advisor from among those currently offered, including:
    • MATH 501 Inquiry into Mathematical Thought
    • MATH 522 Experiencing Geometry
    • MATH 525 Mathematics as Problem Solving
    • MATH 590 Multicultural History of Mathematics

  3. Minimum of 30 hours mathematics teaching practicum in a high school arranged and supervised by program faculty (2 SH).

  4. Passing score on the Praxis exams Mathematics: Proofs, Models, and Problems, Part I (#20063).

Basic Mathematics Endorsement for Licensed Teachers

(10 Semester Hours)

Expectations for admission:

  • An undergraduate minor in mathematics OR successful completion of a minimum of three undergraduate courses from the following list: Calculus II, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Number Theory, Combinatorics, Abstract Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Differential Equations, Topology, Mathematical Logic, Numerical Analysis, courses in computer languages, programming, or graphics, or other approved electives from a mathematics-related field.

  • Passing score on the Praxis exam Middle School Mathematics (#20069).
Program requirements:
  1. MATH 579 Teaching Mathematics to Adolescents (3 SH).

  2. Two to three electives (a minimum of 5 SH) chosen in consultation with a program advisor from among those currently offered, including:
    • MATH 501 Inquiry into Mathematical Thought
    • MATH 522 Experiencing Geometry
    • MATH 525 Mathematics as Problem Solving
    • MATH 590 Multicultural History of Mathematics
    • ED 562 Elementary School Mathematics

  3. Minimum of 30 hour mathematics teaching practicum in a middle level classroom, arranged and supervised by program faculty (2 SH)
